Click Liverpool reports on the BNP’s north west regional organizer, Mike Whitby, who has entered the race to be elected Mayor of Liverpool. |
From the local press:
“Mike Whitby, the BNP’s North West regional organiser, is standing for the far-right party as voters go to the polls on May 3.
“Mr Whitby will be given the opportunity to take part in a public debate with twelve other candidates in a mayoral debate held at Liverpool University later this month.
“Cllr Richard Kemp, standing for the Liberal Democrats, called the party “loathsome” but said he was more than happy to share a platform with Mr Whitby.
“He said: “I think the BNP are loathsome, but fortunately Liverpool don’t like extremists.
“”I think being able to have a debate with Mike Whitby will be a positive thing.
“”Just like when Nick Griffin went on Question Time, it will be an opportunity to make them look incredibly stupid, which I plan to do.
“”When there is no-one around to hear their bile, they can say whatever they like.
“”But I will ridicule them in public and show them up to be the odious party they are.
“”I’m not saying there are no racism issues in this city, but mainly this is a very harmonious city and we don’t want anyone coming in and polluting that.”
“The BNP is not popular in Liverpool, as a social club in the Wavertree area of the city was hit with sanctions after hosting the BNP’s annual conference last year.
“Members of the party who were protesting outside Liverpool Crown Court against the case of 11 Asian men charged with child sex offences earlier this year were met with anti-facist protestors.
“Councillors voted to forgo a referendum on the elected mayor issue earlier this year and said having an elected mayor would improve its chances of receiving £130m of government funding.”
The BNP currently have one elected Mayor in the country, John Cave who is Mayor of Padiham.
