Alleged 'plot' to takeover Birmingham schools

Alleged 'plot' to takeover Birmingham schools

Categories: Latest News

Tuesday March 11 2014

The newspapers in the last few days have been covering leaked documents which allegedly show a ‘plot’ by a small group pf Muslims residing in Birmingham to takeover schools in order to enforce a stricter Islamic conservatism in their ethos and operation.

The documents, labelled ‘Operation Trojan Horse’, were covered in the Daily Mail, Birmingham Mail, The Guardian, Daily Star, Independent, Daily Telegraph and BBC News.

According to the contents of the leaked documents, 12 schools in Birmingham are identified for ‘takeover’ by parents observing ‘stricter Islamic principles’. The methods used by the alleged plotters include ousting headteachers and pushing for the conversion of state schools into academies, thereby removing them from the oversight of local education authorities. The document prescribes a “five-point guide to forcing out a headteacher and installing supporters in key positions to ensure a school is run according to Islamic principles.”

The Guardian notes that one of the alleged plotters, former chair of the Muslim Council of Britain’s education committee, Tahir Alam, has denounced the leaked document as “a malicious fabrication and completely untrue”.

Birmingham City Council have launched an urgent probe to establish the authenticity of the documents, while local MP and Shadow Education Minister, Liam Byrne, called for an ‘urgent inquiry’ into the allegations.
