IAM2017 How Woke Are You? Quiz Night

Categories: Past Event Articles

Friday May 25 2018

The Waltham Forest working group ended Islamophobia Awareness Month with a games night. The working group had local members from the borough including members from Stand Up To Racism, Waltham Forest Momentum, the Liberal Democrats and a local women’s badminton team, Silver Smashers.

The event included a guess who game with pictures of many famous British Muslims, including Mo Farah and Nadia Begum, the winner of Great British Bake Off 2015. Then there was a quiz which was based on questions off our MEND exhibition. At the beginning of the event, all the competitors had a chance to go and read the boards. We then had a lovely fish and chips meal, a classic British dish. The night finished off by Isobel Kingscott, the Head of Research for MEND and Saira Mir, a local popular Waltham Forest resident, announcing the answers and the winners of the competition.

Throughout Islamophobia Awareness Month, the MEND working group in Waltham Forest held many successful events. But the final event, topped them all.

Sophie Bolt, a vocal activist who has helped the working group with various events around the borough commented saying she ‘learnt about the rise of Islamophobia’ and ‘how prejudice of Muslim people is affecting people in terms of not getting jobs’.

A member of Waltham Forest Liberal Democrats, Ukonu Obasi, described Islamophobia as being ‘hugely unacceptable’ and he found the event to be ‘great to learn about the Muslim community’.

The games night was a huge success. It’s the perfect type of event which can bring communities together to raise awareness and help support each other.
